Why would they do this when a little more effort could get very much better fuel economy? The obvious is one of cost but the other is the need for an accurate ‘road map’ of how the vehicle is being driven. Every vehicle has a different and unique ‘performance envelope’ dependent on driving style, quality of fuel used, ambient temperatures operated within, types of journey encountered, payloads carried and whether regular servicing is carried out at the prescribed intervals.
With the data from this measured performance envelope, a skilled technician using advance technology can ‘tune’ or remap a vehicle’s ECU to give far better fuel economy or power or a mixture of both. Note that more power does not necessarily mean reduced fuel economy indeed appropriate power increases can deliver even better torque throughout the rev range reducing the number of gear changes required.

The aim of an engineer when remapping the ECU’s of a turbo diesel engine is to optimise the power curve and improve the fuel economy but most importantly ensure that all optimisations are kept well within the operating parameters originally programmed into the ECU by the manufacturer.
